I had the opportunity to attend the St. Alphonsus Ligouri “Rock” Catholic Church Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest held at Saints Teresa and Bridget Catholic Church. It was a good opportunity to see some of our communities children demonstrate their considerable talents and insight into the world and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy. I had the opportunity to attend the victory party for Senator Barack Obama on February 5th. The Moolah was a rockin' with several hundred volunteers, politicians and media. I don’t know an exact count of people that attended, but the building was full and everyone was excited.

I wish there was no need for Affirmative Action. I wish all children were born with an equal opportunity to achieve great things. I wish that every child had the same opportunity to receive an education and get a good job. Unfortunately that is not reality, there are children born every day who are disadvantaged from day one. They have a very small chance of graduating high school and an even smaller chance of going to college. These children are born into a cycle of poverty that is almost impossible to get out of without programs that level the playing field. This is reality and as a society we must realize what is happening every day in our community, children are born with little opportunity for a great future. Read More »

I read an article today that really troubled me. I am, of course, aware of the crime problems and perception of crime in St. Louis. I have worked hard and will continue to work to try and improve our city, but this article made it clear, we all have a long way to go.
